The God of Small Screens: A Love Letter to Compact Phones

In a world where smartphones seem to be growing larger by the day, I find myself clinging to a dying breed: the small screen phone. Call me old-fashioned, but there’s something magical about a device that fits comfortably in one hand and doesn’t require the pockets of a cargo pant to carry around.

My fascination with compact phones isn’t just a fleeting fancy. It’s a full-blown obsession that has led me down a rabbit hole of obscure devices and discontinued models. My current daily driver? The Asus Zenfone 9. At 5.9 inches, it’s practically microscopic by today’s standards, but to me, it’s perfect.

But let’s rewind a bit. My love affair with small screens began years ago with the Nokia N9. Remember that beauty? A 3.9-inch screen that felt like holding the future in your palm. The way the curved glass melted into the polycarbonate body was nothing short of art. Using it felt intimate, like the phone was an extension of myself rather than a mini-tablet I had to wrestle with.

Then there’s the Balmuda Phone. I admit, I imported this one from Japan, much to the amusement (and confusion) of my friends. But hear me out – a 4.9-inch screen in 2022? It was like finding a unicorn. The vertically oriented interface was a breath of fresh air in a landscape of endless horizontal scrolling. Sure, it had its quirks, but isn’t that what makes a relationship interesting?

And how could I forget the iPhone 13 mini? Apple’s last hurrah in the small phone arena (for now, at least). It’s a powerhouse wrapped in a 5.4-inch package. Using it feels like cheating – all the capabilities of a flagship device that actually fits in my pocket. Revolutionary, I know.

But here’s the rub – finding these compact companions is becoming increasingly difficult. It’s like being a vinyl enthusiast in a world of streaming services. The market has decided that bigger is better, leaving some of us feeling like we’re shouting into the void.

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve walked into a phone store, asked for their smallest model, and been handed something that barely fits in my admittedly average-sized hands. The looks I get when I ask for anything smaller range from confusion to pity. It’s as if wanting a phone that doesn’t require a pop socket to hold securely is some sort of character flaw.

The struggle is real. Major manufacturers have all but abandoned the small phone market. Sony’s Compact line? Gone. The iPhone mini? Discontinued after just two generations. It’s enough to make a small phone enthusiast consider learning to code and building their own device (don’t tempt me).

But why do I persist in this seemingly futile quest for the perfect pocket-sized phone? It’s simple, really. In a world that’s constantly demanding more of our attention, a smaller screen feels like a small act of rebellion. It’s a way of saying, “Yes, I want to stay connected, but I don’t need my entire field of vision occupied by a device.”

There’s also something to be said for the ergonomics. The ability to reach every corner of the screen without performing hand gymnastics is underrated. And let’s not even get started on the joy of actually being able to use a phone one-handed while juggling a coffee or holding onto a subway pole.

Don’t get me wrong – I understand the appeal of larger screens for media consumption and productivity. But must every phone cater to that use case? Whatever happened to specialization, to devices that excel at being, well, phones?

As I write this on my beloved Zenfone 9, I can’t help but wonder about the future of small phones. Will they go the way of the dodo, relegated to tech museums and nostalgic YouTube videos? Or will there be a renaissance, a return to more pocketable devices?

For now, I’ll continue my quixotic quest for the perfect small phone. I’ll scour obscure tech forums, import devices from far-flung countries, and yes, occasionally longingly fondle the display models of plus-sized phones in stores (before remembering why I love my compact companions).

To my fellow small phone enthusiasts – stay strong. Our day will come again. And to the phone manufacturers out there – if you’re listening, please, throw us a bone. Some of us still believe that good things come in small packages.

Until then, I’ll be here, happily tapping away on my small screen, living proof that size isn’t everything – at least when it comes to phones.
