Profound Dialogues from Movies – Part I

Asoka

There’s this scene in the movie Asoka, where the great emperor Asoka cuts off his hair and tries to look like a common man, in order to camouflage himself with the masses. Some Buddhist monks pass by and there’s a dialogue exchange between them.

Monk: You’re not from here. Who are you ?

Asoka: An ordinary traveller.

Monk: Ordinary ? The sun remains the sun even behind clouds. Your destiny indicates that you are in no way ordinary.

Asoka: What lies in my destiny then ? That I’m a prince ? One day I will be enthroned ? Be an emperor ?

Monk: Even emperors are ordinary. Your destiny transcends the throne.

Asoka: Whose destiny can surpass that if an emperor’s ?

Monk: A traveler’s… when his journey has been completed.
